Secretary to the People exhibition at The Free Library of Philadelphia

Central Parkway Library, 1901 Vine Street, Philadelphia

This multimedia installation showcases over 20 years of work by artist Sheryl Oring. With her “I Wish to Say” project, in which she dresses as a 1960s secretary and takes her typewriter to public spaces such as libraries and parks to document people’s hopes, fears, and expectations of the nation’s future. Oring has defined socially engaged art practice in the 21st century, amplifying the everyday acts of listening and meaning making. The exhibition will be open during Parkway Central Library’s public hours during the first 100 days of the U.S. presidency.

Word Powered: Exploring Free Speech Though Art

Group exhibition at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia. 321 Chesnut Street, Philadelphia.

This juried exhibition examines the dynamic relationship between censorship, freedom of expression, and diverse perspectives. Bringing together a range of voices, mediums, and subject matter, the exhibition challenges visitors to reflect on their role in safeguarding our right to free speech, and better understand how language can be manipulated, suppressed, or celebrated. The works on display invite audiences across the political and cultural divide to engage with the potency of words, demonstrating how art can spark vital conversations, and illuminate our collective voice.

March 7, 6 to 8 pm at Philly Typewriter, 1735 E Passyunk Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19148

The Art of Typing: Unplug, Slow Down, and Write

Join me at Philly Typewriter for a special event in celebration of the Global Day of Unplugging! Step away from screens and immerse yourself in the tactile experience of typing on a manual typewriter. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned typist, I'll guide you through the mechanics of these classic machines, offering tips and hands-on practice to help you rediscover the joy of analog writing. This is a rare opportunity to slow down, connect with the rhythm of the keys, and engage in a mindful, screen-free creative exercise. Come type, unplug, and be part of a global movement that celebrates being present in the moment!

March 5, 2025, noon to 2 pm

Send a postcard to the president

On the day after the first State of the Union address, dictate your messages to the U.S. president in the lobby of Parkway Central from noon to 2 PM. This free, all ages public program will be led by Sheryl Oring, whose work is currently featured in the “Secretary to the People” exhibit at the library.

Messages will be transcribed onto a postcard using a typewriter and carbon copies of the messages will be incorporated into Oring’s growing archive. Postcards with each message will be sent to the White House.

Join us for this unique immersive experience that uplifts civic engagement. Participation is first come, first served.
